A decision’s outcome controls and directs pathways and other aspects of the process. This notion improves upon the legacy business rules approach. Today, business rules are understood to be a subset of decisions. The managed business decision determines how the business will behave to be consistent with compliance, operational, risk, and other objectives. Decision modeling can reveal how a single decision can trigger and control multiple aspects of business processes, including events, activities, and data.
In the past organizations have not always treated their decisions as ‘first-class’ citizens or assets. In many instances decisions were confused with rules. This arises from the lack of a consistent approach to easily represent where decisions were made, what they were and why (input.) Once an organization begins to manage their decisions and the processes they control in a consistent and visual way, a higher level of productivity and agility can emerge. In advanced decision modeling, additional process directives are added to the process to radically extend and accelerate the control that can be achieved. BPMN/DMN can yield an improvement in the symbolic controls of the adaptable process, which offers the most competitive practice today’s for business operating infrastructure, which is all about supporting changes at the speed that phenomena changes, at the speed of consciousness.
